Eric Stein Biography:
Eric Stein is an Indianapolis native, currently living and working in Zionsville, Indiana. The bucolic surroundings of this quaint town have rekindled his love of landscapes and skyscapes, but he has been working within the controlled environs of still life. Eric always enjoys drawing, but lately, his main impetus has been painting in oils and acrylics. Eric is in a constant state of observation and draws upon this for his subject matter. The play of light and shadow are the top influences on what he portrays. Eric is edging toward a metaphorical message in the content but still finds that the simple and subtle interplay of chosen objects is enough.
Eric’s paintings are heavily influenced by the old, and the not-so-old masters, from Caravaggio to Balthus. Eric is always interested in trying new ways to better achieve his goals but often uses the historic tried and true methods to find the subject on the canvas through visual measure and finding the relationships in place, tone, and value. A saturation of color and value along with a heavy chiaroscuro approach helps to achieve a fascination with the interplay of common objects. As the objects put on a performance, he hopes to draw the viewer to engage more fully in their own everyday scenes.
Eric has been making art since he could hold a pencil and never had any plans of doing anything else. He attended Herron School of Art and earned a BA in painting. He never pursued a gallery presence or scholastic involvement, preferring to create for his own fulfillment and advancement, but he never stopped creating. He has of late decided it is time to get involved and feels this has impacted the quality and depth of his work both technically and emotionally. Eric’s work can currently be seen in the Summer Show at the 3rd Floor Gallery in Indianapolis. Recently, his work was featured in the Purple Juried exhibition at the Garfield Park Art Center in Indianapolis.
During the month of May, his work was chosen for the juried exhibition for the second annual Art of Speed exhibition at Gallery Forty-Two in downtown Indianapolis. Earlier this year, a larger collection of his still-life work was featured in the Spring Show at the 3rd Floor Gallery in Indianapolis.
